ERP Application: Inventory Status 2.0

A cool feature of the original application was to provide an visual 'map' of storage tank information. This at a glance approach was an effective visual approach towards understanding current inventory state. This was implemented by an fairly innovative vendor provided product that handled the dirty work of the rendering. I love this type of stuff. It was progressive, however limited in scope. After observing this in action, I realized a few areas of improvement as follows.

  • Instead of a single shared view, support the ability for users to clone/create a 'custom' view of the tank map.
  • Allow for more filtering options, minimize viusual noise and provide a more focused view into relevant information for a given user.
  • Introduce a 3D experience, allowing the user to pan, zoom, and rotate around the tank map, providing a more immersive and interactive experience. This is perhaps overkill as the original 2D experience 'gets the job done', however you can't beat the cool factor.

This would normally be a hard sell in a large enterprise, however the final result was pulled off in about 2 days. Given an well defined object model, and detailed set of specifications fed to an agent, this is easily accomplished. A few years back, this would have required a significant amount of effort in order to learn an UI library, get familiar with the documentation, and implement the features.
